La nuova casa di Selmec nella piccola città di Chieti, in Abruzzo, racconta un’illuminante storia di passione, visione ed eccellenza italiana. L’azienda di automazione industriale che dal 1982 disegna soluzioni su misura per i suoi clienti in Italia e al mondo, ci ha chiesto di costruire, ex novo, la sua nuova sede per poter offrire ai propri dipendenti la miglior esperienza lavorativa possibile. Il nostro team cross-BU ha accolto la sfida di creare un luogo di lavoro stimolante e verde, capace di favorire l’ingaggio e rafforzare il senso di appartenenza e condivisione tra i dipendenti.
Portare le curve organiche della natura fin dentro l’edificio. È l’idea che dà l’avvio al progetto e ispira la forma di Social Core, la corte centrale a tripla altezza disegnata come un canyon, conformazione tipica del paesaggio abruzzese, per promuovere interazione e lavoro informale, ma anche per mettere in comunicazione la parte di produzione con quella del terziario. La facciata ventilata in gres e lamiera liscia risalta e valorizza la matericità dell’involucro dell’edificio che sorge in un contesto di capannoni industriali. Il risultato finale è uno spazio innovativo e funzionale, 2000 mq in totale, che accoglie le persone in un’oasi di comfort ed efficienza per offrire loro nuovi modi di vivere il luogo del lavoro.
Un vuoto ricco di vita: l’idea del “canyon” interno nasce dalla volontà di umanizzare l’ambiente di lavoro, renderlo confortevole e capace di creare sinergia tra i diversi settori interni quali produzione, ricerca e sviluppo, ecc. La tripla altezza del Social Core, ottenuto creando un vuoto centrale e sfalsando i piani, diventa così spazio di socializzazione: al suo interno ospita il Work Cafè, che connette l’interno e l’esterno, offrendo momenti di relax ma anche di confronto e lavoro informale; e il Giardino d’inverno, uno spazio verde arredato con fioriere incassate a pavimento, un vero e proprio green wall, con dei tavoli per poter consumare i pasti. Divanetti e mensole distribuiti lungo i corridoi delle balconate trasformano uno spazio di passaggio in un ambiente funzionale, adatto anche ai momenti di lavoro informale.
L’ispirazione green e le tonalità della natura guidano anche la scelta dei colori degli interni, colori che esplodono nelle sale riunioni. Un grande lucernario nel tetto dell’edificio inonda di luce naturale il “canyon” della corte centrale. Oltre al lucernario vi sono porzioni vetrate al piano terra e una curtain wall a doppia altezza lungo il lato Nord-Est del building, che alleggeriscono le facciate.
Nella progettazione degli esterni particolare risalto si dà all’uso di due materiali forti che si alternano e compongono la facciata. I pannelli in lamiera liscia color antracite avvolgono le sinuosità delle parti curve dell’edificio e dei marcapiani, mentre le lastre in gres effetto pietra contraddistinguono la parte frontale dei prospetti. Perché questa scelta? Per conferire all’involucro una certa matericità in modo che risalti rispetto ai capannoni industriali e prefabbricati che caratterizzano il contesto in cui sorge l’edificio.
Cemento, lamiera stirata e materiali industriali: il laboratorio di prototipazione Protecno Lab, collocato al piano primo, è uno spazio importante la cui impronta tecnologica è esaltata anche a livello di materiali. Le pareti non sono tutte opache per lasciare intravedere quello che succede dentro, restituendo così la giusta valenza al mondo delle macchine.

Selmec’s new home in the small city of Chieti, Abruzzo tells an inspiring story about passion, vision and Italian excellence. The industrial automation company, which over the last 40 years has been designing bespoke solutions for its clients in Italy and worldwide, asked us to build, from scratch, their new headquarters in order to provide the best possible work experience to its employees. Our cross-BU team was challenged with conceiving a green and empowering workplace capable of augmenting engagement and boosting the sense of belonging and collaboration among the staff.
Bringing the organic curves of nature inside the building is the idea that kicks off the project and gives shape to a central triple-height space, the building’s Social Core. Designed as an internal canyon, a typical landscape configuration of Abruzzo, it encourages interaction and informal work while serving as a connection point between the areas of manufacturing and services. The exterior clad in sandstone and smooth metal sheet emphasize and showcase the material appeal of the covering of the building, situated in a landscape of industrial hangars. The final result is an innovative and functional space, 2000 sq.m in total, that welcomes people in an oasis of comfort and efficiency to offer them new ways to live a workplace.
A void full of life: the idea of internal “canyon” stems from the desire to humanize the work environment, making it more comfortable and capable of creating synergy among the different internal sectors such as manufacturing, R&D, etc. The triple height of Social Core of the building, obtained by creating a central void and aligning the floors in offset relation, thus becomes a space for socialization: inside, it hosts Welcome Café that connects the outside and the inside, offering moments of relax as well as confrontation and informal work; and Winter Garden, a green space furnished with ground-embedded flower pots – a genuine greenwall indeed, with tables for enjoying one’s meals. Sofas and shelves distributed along the balconies’ corridors turn a passage area into a functional setting, suitable for hosting informal work moments.
Green inspiration and shades of nature also guide the interior colors – colors that explode in the meeting rooms. A large skylight in the building’s roof brings in natural light into the “canyon” of the Social Core. In addition to the skylight, glass portions on the ground floor and a double-height curtainwall along the Northeast side of the building both contribute to lighten the façades.
The design of the building’s exterior gives a particular emphasis on the use of two alternating materials that constitute the facade. The panels in smooth anthracite grey metal sheet wrap up the sinuous parts and the belt courses of the building, while the stone-effect sandstone slabs characterize the frontal part of the façades. Why this choice? In order to confer a certain materiality to the covering to make it stand out amidst the industrial hangars and pre-casts that feature the landscape.
Concrete, metal mesh and industrial materials: the prototyping laboratory, Protecno Lab, located on the first floor, is an important space whose technological footprint is enhanced by the choice of materials. The walls are not all opaque to allow glimpses on what’s happening inside, and therefore to restore the right value to the world of machines.
